The UK Government has announced that it is stepping up its response to the COVID-19 (coronavirus).
It comes after the World Health Organization has labelled the outbreak of the disease as a pandemic. Employers should now take action to help protect the health and safety of their employees.
It is important that organisations look at their absence management procedures, sick-leave policies, options for remote working (if applicable) and overall contingency planning to ensure they are best equipped to deal with what is a changing situation.

There are also some steps that employers should continue to take:
- keep everyone updated on actions being taken to reduce risks of exposure in the workplace
- make sure everyone's contact numbers and emergency contact details are up to date
- make sure managers know how to spot symptoms of coronavirus and are clear on any relevant processes, for example sickness reporting and sick pay, and procedures in case someone in the workplace develops the virus
